Hey beautiful (yes, I’m talking to you)!
Just wanted to...

Hey beautiful (yes, I’m talking to you)!

Just wanted to write a quick blog saying thank you to everyone who is waiting it out with us. It’s taken us a long time to write this record, but I assure you, it’s going to be worth the wait. We’re sitting on about 30 songs now, 10-12 of which will make up our best record to date! I don’t plan on stopping the writing until we’re out of the studio. Hell, I plan on writing continuously, I’ve learned that the more I do it, the better the songs get. You’d think I’d run out of content… I haven’t yet! So until I do, it’s writing, writing, writing! Thinking about whipping up another acoustic Christmas song for you. Whatcha think? Have you heard this one I did in 2008?

Again, thank you for sticking with us. This Prov has many years of life left in it, we’re still very much a band, and honestly I don’t think we’ve been more excited to make a record than we are now. Hang in there, and have a wonderful holiday! OXOXOXOX,

-Dan

Please…PLEASE, join me this Thursday as I play a handful of Christmas songs among a few This Prov tunes!

I’ll be doing the set through a site called Stage It. There are limited tickets available so don’t miss out. It may seem weird to pay for an online performance, but I’ve done one of these before and the thing I really love about it is the intimacy. It gives me a chance to really interact and chat with everyone. It feels special.

But the thing that really makes this special - all proceeds will benefit Charity Water. This is a great organization that works to provide clean drinking water to people in developing countries. If Christmas is about giving, than this is a pretty sweet way to do so!

Check it out, buy a ticket, and I’ll see you there,

90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are of children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation. - charitywater.org/whywater/

andyhorst:

from Dan Fuckin’ Young of This Providence:

About 2 weeks ago I became a home-owner. Yep, the mrs and I bought our first house! It’s moments like this when I think about how strange and beautiful life has been for me.

I was in a hurry to get started. I surprised my parents with my coming existence in the first year of their marriage and soon after I was born they bought their first house. I’m told it was a shit-box then, but Dad never stopped banging a hammer on the thing. He was constantly (and slowly) fixing it and adding to it. He likes to do that stuff…me, not as much. By the time I was 16, when we moved to the states, it was an charming and inviting little home. I loved that place so much. In “Chasing The Wind” I even wrote of the pink-painted treehouse sitting in the fork of a weeping willow in our backyard. It was home.

Now, 10 years after leaving that house, I finally have my own home! It’s really exciting, but it too is a little fixer-upper. I imagine my situation must be similar to my parents (minus the kids). Since the day we got the keys I have been slaving away dismantling and reassembling the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. I’m so sore right now, but I can’t wait till it’s done and we move in and I can punch a hole in the wall if I get really excited and I won’t have to pay anyone anything! I could just leave the hole and store treats in it!

Oh and I want a veggie patch. George Harrison was a gardener and he said it helped with his song writing, I like that idea. I’m going to be a gardener too! Ok, that’s all I got right now. Thanks. Cheers. Bye.

Dan

P.S. Here’s a picture of Andy flexing and my dad carefully inspecting our work (he’s an excessive perfectionist).

from Andy Horst of This Providence:

I know… this picture needs some sort of explanation. The band and I just got home from spending a couple weeks locked up in a house near San Diego writing and demoing songs. We turned a very generous friend’s house into a mini recording studio. In short, it was awesome.

Now to explain this photo. If at first glance you thought that this looks like dirty underwear taped to a floor tom, well then you were right. There’s no absolutes when you’re recording… especially if you’re recording music yourself. At the end of the day you do you what you gotta do to get the best sound. Now for a song we were working on that day, I wanted to imitate the sound of a orchestral timpani drum. After some experimenting I found that taping my dirty underwear to my drum seemed like the best option. Is this scientific you ask? No… but after drinking a pot and half of coffee and going a little bit stir crazy… then yes. Dirty underwear + floor tom = timpani.

Hey everyone....

fueledbyramen:

from Dan Young of This Providence:

Hey everyone. What’s going on? I’ve been working hard recently, and by that I mean, working hard on my work ethic. In a moment of inspiration, a few months earlier, I mentioned in a blog that I had fallen head-over-heels for the morning calm. And while I still feel that way, another side of me relishes in staying up late watching TV on Hulu. It’s a battle, but I’m learning how to be a grown up…slowly…sort-of.

Aside from tackling my sleeping habits, I’ve also been developing a deeper understanding for the craft of song-writing. Currently I am working on songs for the next record which will be our 4th full-length and I still feel like such an amateur. This time round I’m learning just how much work it really takes to write a song. A good song, that is. When you’re young you walk into song-writing like it’s this lofty, magical sort of art that seems to be a whole lot of luck. And I do still believe half of it is chance, or providence, or whatever you choose to call it, but the other half is a whole lot of hard work, and patience. Mostly, I’ve had to be patient with myself. I’m not a quick learner, or reader, so I’ve had to invest a lot of time purely into learning and researching the craft of writing.

Next week we’re all headed to San Diego to take over a friends house near the beach and work through a bunch of the songs we have written so far. It’s going to be a great trip and I think we’ll walk away from it with the framework for the next record. I’m so excited!

In other news, I just bought some new jeans from eBay for my first time. Thank the good Lord, they fit like a dream! The kind of dream that you wish you had more of.

Thanks for reading,
Dan

P.S. If you’re interested in writing songs I have been reading the following books, I suggest you do the same:

The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield
This book is written from the perspective of an author, but is relevant to all writers and artists. It’s a REALLY easy read and has drastically changed my perspective on my profession.

The Song Writers Idea Book by Sheila Davis
This book is just as much an examination of song-writing as it is an “idea” book. Really helpful, I read this one while writing “Who Are You Now?”

Tunesmith by Jimmy Webb
Written by the world-class song writer, Jimmy Webb who is the only artist to have ever received Grammy awards for music, lyrics and orchestration. I’m about a quarter of the way into this one and only wish I’d read it sooner. This is by far the most in-depth look at song-writing I’ve read.
