from Andy Horst of This Providence:
I know… this picture needs some sort of explanation. The band and I just got home from spending a couple weeks locked up in a house near San Diego writing and demoing songs. We turned a very generous friend’s house into a mini recording studio. In short, it was awesome.
Now to explain this photo. If at first glance you thought that this looks like dirty underwear taped to a floor tom, well then you were right. There’s no absolutes when you’re recording… especially if you’re recording music yourself. At the end of the day you do you what you gotta do to get the best sound. Now for a song we were working on that day, I wanted to imitate the sound of a orchestral timpani drum. After some experimenting I found that taping my dirty underwear to my drum seemed like the best option. Is this scientific you ask? No… but after drinking a pot and half of coffee and going a little bit stir crazy… then yes. Dirty underwear + floor tom = timpani.
